Drywall 101

There are many factors that impact the quality and appearance of finished drywall. The results are largely determined by the framing job, as well the overall care that was given during the drywall install. The final step is to seal the joints and complete the project to your specifications. Not to be overlooked, drywall finishing is essential for any wall that serves as a separator. There are five different levels for finishing Denver drywall. Each one covers different needs. Let's see how they work.

 

This is temporary construction so no drywall finishing or taping is required. Also, you can use the Level 0 finish for drywall when you are not sure about its finish.

Drywall contractors use Level 1 in attics, garages, or other areas not accessible by the general public. The joint compound covers fasteners but has tape for drywall joints. If the compound is to be used in corridors and areas where there is pedestrian traffic drywall companies may add accessories.

 

The interior angles and joints are covered with tape. Any excess compound is removed immediately to leave a thin covering over the joints. The joint compound can also be used to cover fasteners or accessories. You can still see tool marks, ridges and other markings. Level 2 drywall finishing is useful when tile substrates are made of water-resistant boards.

 

Level 3 finishes have the tape embedded with joint compound and wiped over the joints to create a thin coat. The difference here is that the joint compound is coated with an extra layer. This covers the interior angles and joints. Fasteners and other accessories are covered with two layers. There are no tool marks nor ridges. Once the surface has been prepared it is coated with drywall primer before being decorated.

Level 3 drywall finishing is for wall decorations and textures that are heavy. This finish level is not suitable for lightweight wallcoverings and casual flat residential painting.

This is where the second step must be repeated. These are the steps that apply the joint compound to joints and interior angles. Then the area must be wiped to remove the thin coating. The difference in this situation is that the drywall contractor will apply two coats to the flat joints and one to interior angles. The contractors apply three coats, one over each of the fasteners and accessories. All joint compounds will be smoothed out and no tool marks will be left. The contractor then finishes the surface with a primer.

This is the recommended drywall finishing level for light residential wallcoverings and flat painted surfaces. To ensure that joints and fasteners don't show through the flat, glossy paint or light pattern on the wallcoverings, it is vital that they are well concealed.

This is the highest finish grade for drywall. It assures uniformity, conceals all imperfections, and guarantees perfect consistency. The interior angles and joints still have tape embedded into the joint compound. This tape is removed quickly and wiped off before two separate coatings are applied over flat joints. A second coat is applied over the interior angle. To conceal accessories and fasteners, three coatings are used. The entire surface receives a skim coat with joint compound. This will ensure a smooth surface and the concealment of any imperfections. There are no tool marks nor ridges.

A primer is needed before decorating drywall. The primer will prevent fasteners from showing through drywall. A smooth surface makes it easy to apply flat, semi-gloss and gloss paints. It hides any imperfections because level 5 drywall can be used in combination with lighting to conceal flaws.

To sum up. Smooth surfaces are essential for flat or glossy paints and when the lighting conditions are not favorable. This is Level 5. It is important to choose the highest level of drywall finishes. Texturized commercial painting isn't necessary, but you will need to pay level 5.
